CALAPAN CITY – Vowing to preserve the government gains in internal peace and security campaign in the whole Southern Luzon area, particularly in the island provinces of Marinduque and Mindoro, the highest military chief in the region has ordered all field commanders here to increase its offensive operations against communist insurgents.
In issuing his “find, fight and win versus NPA (New People’s Army)” directive, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Southern Luzon Commander Major General Ricardo R. Visaya, during his visit to the Philippine Army’s 203rd AFP Infantry Brigade camp in Bansud, Oriental Mindoro over the weekend, checked on the current status of the internal peace and security operations in the said island provinces.
He was briefed by Army Col. Mariano Antonio S. Perez, Jr, commander of the 203rd Infantry Brigade, of the latter unit’s accomplishments from January 1 up to present. According to Colonel Perez, the brigade has neutralized 12 NPA personalities, discovered 13 NPA camps and cleared two of 13 enemy affected or influenced barangays in the said areas.
And based on available data, Perez estimated that there are only 66 NPAs remaining in Mindoro island. He also reported the government military unit’s intensified stakeholder engagements and other roles like support to law enforcement, support to environmental protection and support to humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
Having achieved these accomplishments, Major General Visaya encouraged his commanders to strive more in their campaign efforts.
“Develop a tactic to find the enemy, fight them, (and) then of course to win against them,” the high-ranking military official said. “Let us not be contented with what we’ve accomplished now, we have a long way to go,” Visaya said, and personally told Perez to “be an active commander.”
General Visaya also paid visit to Oriental Mindoro Governor Alfonso V. Umali, Jr in this city where the two leaders talked about their intention and commitment to make Oriental Mindoro a more peaceful and developed province.
Earlier in the island province of Marinduque, the AFP-SOLCOM chief was warmly welcomed by Governor Carmencita Reyes there. They talked about for an active participation of members of the Citizen Auxiliary Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) in the campaign against small-scale illegal miners.
“We will have our CAFGUs trained on support to law enforcement operations to help address the province concern on illegal miners,” said Colonel Eric Parayno, Commander of the 201st Infantry Brigade who has operational jurisdiction over Marinduque.
The AFP stated that SOLCOM continuous its focused military operations against the NPAs in Southern Tagalog and Bicol regions in order to have a more peaceful environment ready for further development. (By JUANCHO R. MAHUSAY)
