Police trainee drowned to dead in Oriental Mindoro; ‘crazy’ man committed suicide after killing his wife

CALAPAN CITY – The body of a missing police trainee, who was reported missing for about three days, was found floating Wednesday morning near the coast of Calapan Bay, police reported here yesterday (October 27) morning.

Police Supt. Ronaldo F. De Jesus, commander of Regional Public Safety Battalion of the MIMAROPA Philippine National Police (RPSB-PNP), identified the dead police trainee as Dan Romano, estimated to be 20 years old.

Romano was last seen to be drowning and calling for help when a speedboat he and RPSB doctor P/Supt. Romeo Salvadora were riding suddenly turned down as it encountered a rough sea more than a kilometer off the coast of Brgy. Lazareto, this city, at about 3:30 PM of October 23.

Police said that it was a sunny Sunday when the incident happened but what occurred in the said day is a case of “subasko,” a colloquial fishermen’s term for a sudden occurrence of a rough sea during sunny day.  The speedboat, which is reportedly owned by Salvadora, could not resist the roughness of the sea and so, it turned down during the incident.

Meanwhile, a mentally deranged man killed himself after stabbing to dead his wife in an apparent jealousy in a remote village in Victoria town, Oriental Mindoro last October 21.

According to the police report, the dead suspect, identified as Leonardo Hatulan, 38, killed his 50-year old wife named Donna, a school teacher in Brgy. Alcate, Victoria, after the man got frustrated when he failed to convince the woman to reconcile with him from their more than one month of separation.

After killing his wife with a kitchen knife, Leonardo committed suicide by stabbing himself in the neck.(By JUANCHO R. MAHUSAY)
